Everglades Pygmy Sunfish (Elassoma evergladei)

Tiny Native Gem | Blackwater Specialist | Rare & Peaceful Nano Fish

The Everglades Pygmy Sunfish is a miniature, beautifully cryptic fish native to the slow, tannin-stained waters of the southeastern U.S. Males display dazzling flashes of electric blue and deep black during breeding, while females have more muted, earth-toned patterns. This peaceful, secretive species thrives in heavily planted, low-flow blackwater environments and is best kept in species tanks or with other tiny, gentle fish.

Size: 0.75–1.25 inches

Temperament: Very peaceful; ideal for nano tanks and blackwater setups

Habitat: Prefers dense vegetation and dark, acidic water

Diet: Micropredator—requires live or frozen foods (e.g., daphnia, baby brine, microworms)

Care Level: Moderate; thrives in stable, well-maintained systems

A must-have for native fish enthusiasts and nano aquarists, the Everglades Pygmy Sunfish offers rare beauty and fascinating behavior in a pint-sized package.
